This Summer, Don’t Just Unplug. Check What’s Plugged In

As summer approaches, many of us start winding down: logging off, locking up, and getting ready to relax. Whether you’re heading away for the holidays or just switching into summer mode, it’s a great time to take a quick look at what’s plugged in at your home and workplace.

It’s not uncommon to see claims over summer involving devices, systems, and tools left unattended, or unexpected surges and outages. A few simple checks now could help you avoid unwanted surprises later.

For homeowners and holidaymakers

Smart tech is great, until it isn’t
Got a smart doorbell, camera, or security system? If you’re heading away, make sure:

  • Your system is still connected to Wi-Fi
  • Auto-updates won’t disconnect your access
  • You’ve shared app access with someone local (in case of battery or signal issues)

Check powerboards, chargers, and extension cords
Overloaded outlets or cheap chargers left running can increase fire risk, especially in hot weather. Switch off and unplug what you won’t be using.

Fridge or freezer protection
If the power cuts while you’re away, contents can spoil fast. Consider a surge protector or a power alert device. Some home policies may cover contents loss, but only under certain conditions.

For tradies and business owners

Leaving a site unattended? Think about what’s running
If you’re locking up for a break, now’s the time to:

  • Check that high-load tools or equipment aren’t left plugged in
  • Switch off heaters, welders, or compressors where safe to do so
  • Unplug devices not in use to avoid surge damage

Using remote systems? Give them a test
If your security or monitoring systems rely on remote access, make sure:

  • Passwords are updated and secure
  • App access hasn’t expired or changed with a new phone
  • Alerts go to the right people in case something goes wrong

Power surge? Power outage? Don’t assume you’re covered

Some policies offer cover for electrical damage, power surge, or loss of refrigerated goods, but not all. Conditions may apply, such as how long the outage lasted or when the damage was discovered.

If you’re not sure what your current policy includes, your Dawson’s broker can walk you through it and help reduce any surprises at claim time.

 A simple summer checklist

  • Unplug non-essential appliances before you leave
  • Check your security system settings and battery backups
  • Review your contents or tools cover for electrical risks
  • Talk to your broker if you’ve made recent changes to your home or business
  • Make sure your emergency contact details are up to date

We’re here to keep your cover in step with real life, even when you’re on a break.

If you’ve added new devices, changed how you use your property, or just want peace of mind over summer, your Dawson’s broker is here to help.
