When a claim takes longer than expected

Most people don’t think too much about the claims process until they need to.

And when they do need it, it’s usually because something has already gone wrong.

A car accident.

Storm damage.

A leak that’s caused more damage than first thought.

In those situations, it’s understandable to want things sorted as quickly as possible.

And whilst many claims move through relatively smoothly, some take longer than people expect.

When that happens, it can be frustrating, particularly if you’re waiting on repairs, assessments or decisions before things can move forward.

The good news is that there’s usually a reason.

Understanding what’s happening behind the scenes can help explain why some claims are resolved quickly while others take a little longer. And hopefully, having a better understanding of the process can help reduce some of the stress if you ever need to make a claim.

No two claims are exactly the same

One of the biggest factors is simply the nature of the claim itself.

A straightforward windscreen replacement is very different from a major water damage claim or a commercial loss involving multiple parties.

Some claims can be assessed and resolved relatively quickly. Others require additional information, inspections, reports or specialist input before a decision can be made.

The more moving parts involved, the more time may be needed to fully understand what has happened and how the policy responds.

Information helps keep things moving

One of the most common causes of delays is missing information.

That’s completely understandable.

When you’ve just experienced a loss, gathering paperwork and documentation is rarely your first priority.

However, insurers may need information such as:

  • Photos of the damage
  • Repair quotes
  • Proof of ownership
  • Details from third parties
  • Reports from tradespeople or specialists

Having as much information available as possible from the outset can help avoid unnecessary delays later in the process.

Sometimes more investigation is needed

Not every claim is straightforward.

In some situations, insurers need to better understand the cause, extent or circumstances surrounding the loss before making a decision.

This may involve:

  • Assessors inspecting the damage
  • Engineers or specialists providing advice
  • Tradesmen preparing repair estimates
  • Additional information being requested

Whilst this can add time to the process, it helps ensure claims are assessed fairly and accurately.

External factors can play a part too

Sometimes the delay has very little to do with the claim itself.

Following major weather events, for example, there can be increased demand for assessors, repairers and tradespeople.

Material shortages, contractor availability and repair backlogs can all affect timeframes, even when a claim has already been accepted.

These factors are often outside everyone’s control, but they can have a significant impact on how quickly repairs or replacements can be completed.

Where your broker can help

One of the advantages of working with a broker is that we’re involved in claims every day.

We understand what information is likely to be required, what timeframes are generally reasonable, and where delays can sometimes occur.

Whilst we can’t control every timeframe, we can help ensure claims have the information they need, keep communication flowing, and assist in navigating the process when things feel uncertain or unclear.

Keeping things in perspective

Most claims are resolved without issue.

But when a claim does take longer than expected, there is usually more happening behind the scenes than first meets the eye.

Understanding some of the factors involved can help set realistic expectations and reduce frustration if additional time is needed.

And if you’re ever unsure where things stand, that’s exactly what we’re here for.

At Dawson’s, we’re always happy to talk things through in plain English and help you understand what comes next.
